For centuries, historians have read the contemporary documents relating to the Arian crisis and the Council of Nicaea within a framework shaped by the one-sided narrative produced by Athanasius. The lecture will therefore address the hermeneutical challenges for the study of this period and present the outlines of a new interpretation of the events leading up to the Council of Nicaea (325).
